Alberta Chapter of CSCS: Annual Christmas Cocktail Reception and Update on Shareholder Democracy Issues
On October 25 and 26, Canadian Stakeholders came together in Toronto to exchange vital information regarding shareholder democracy issues, with a view to improve Canadian shareholder democracy and create value for the Canadian capital markets. The sessions focused on shareholder economic and governance roles, policy objectives, expectations of the proxy voting process and perceived opportunities for improvement. Issuers, service providers, market participants and voting agents were all in attendance to discuss their individual roles in the process, as well as perceived strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. A session was also held to focus on how the US and other international markets have approached shareholder democracy, comparing and contrasting processes and outcomes, and suggested lessons that might guide reform in Canada. A selection of regulators were also in attendance to discuss their regulatory agendas, short and long term objectives, strengths and weaknesses of existing regulation and opportunities for renewal.
